Chapter VI: Morse Code |
|
Messages in Morse code can be sent by flashing a light - a method useful when signaling between ships.
Extensions have been made over the years to include punctuation. The at-sign, @ = · − − · − · , was added in 2004. This is a combination of A and C - as is the @ symbol - a clever visual pun!
Even after the invention of the telephone, Morse code was widely used when radio transmission (e.g.) was so noisy as to make a human voice difficult to understand. However, since the invention of the internet, Morse code is rapidly going the way of the Dodo.
